Quite a while ago now I went to Spindle Cottage Workshop in deepest Digby Fen and, with other members of Country Roads Quilters, did a workshop with Wendy Snape Coyne on inchies. These are tiny fabric and thread collages that can be made into items of jewellery or used to decorate cushion, notebook covers etc.<br />
First we took a variety of fabric pieces and ironed them onto Bondaweb, all the pieces cut accurately so that they butted up to each other. For this project I used pieces of fabric leftover from the Country Roads Quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkzmcAd5cLSturN64af5jJkBxADQ0pHq5uY_FZpu6ukdvAsKsNVGJvuSVowYnCnrcCBSBIoMdvDPbwlRFBMpXu3DzqL-q__5fXghm6coIkJLRqEiKyYX8q558j4TOMam7wAQclna_ajTU/s1600/IMG_0260.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkzmcAd5cLSturN64af5jJkBxADQ0pHq5uY_FZpu6ukdvAsKsNVGJvuSVowYnCnrcCBSBIoMdvDPbwlRFBMpXu3DzqL-q__5fXghm6coIkJLRqEiKyYX8q558j4TOMam7wAQclna_ajTU/s400/IMG_0260.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
Then it was time to have fun with decorative stitches and some interesting threads to stitch down the fabric and add interest and texture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdH7s_XkSk0wLBNwFlTb5uHwf1o0uf8ndv-q65kfVfe_cq1J2GRNBpRvf17oXdmUiIBl72PPfii7jefxBOq2bUL1MFr3T0dR-tcLIA8yfzUnPc9X8pnWfzyslTTFuINf6tetqiiQmdfro/s1600/IMG_0261.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdH7s_XkSk0wLBNwFlTb5uHwf1o0uf8ndv-q65kfVfe_cq1J2GRNBpRvf17oXdmUiIBl72PPfii7jefxBOq2bUL1MFr3T0dR-tcLIA8yfzUnPc9X8pnWfzyslTTFuINf6tetqiiQmdfro/s400/IMG_0261.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some very accurate measuring, stitching and cutting followed and then some zigzagging to end up with lots of "inchies", one inch squares of textile deliciousness.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQMrQkGH6fS6QkLPNhoVmJUig2uFGpyrq8Yssj0ZXeIvRl8O_RDfU_n6HImpNUm6-rV47f1sUzzB14djmxSaeCKCgkgbNZWFeDapOyhPjuL67Uu8-wy3n_o0RkSjI4Pb4R0oX-njt3vZE/s1600/IMG_0262.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQMrQkGH6fS6QkLPNhoVmJUig2uFGpyrq8Yssj0ZXeIvRl8O_RDfU_n6HImpNUm6-rV47f1sUzzB14djmxSaeCKCgkgbNZWFeDapOyhPjuL67Uu8-wy3n_o0RkSjI4Pb4R0oX-njt3vZE/s400/IMG_0262.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each inchie was then glued to a brooch back. At this point I discovered that the brooch backs were not quite one inch square! So fudging followed!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnB48zOFON_7zQ1gToaTJMMGVznden-aetclXhZ3cwKzB8XftKeFRTKS9fuMrW7A5KC8JENiyGmWbnYQjvBCMyC4TRPugp2aYiRvBnar4UxTeyXqNiMZZJooIbZFFnb2qIMhAcpPsPQwI/s1600/IMG_0263.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnB48zOFON_7zQ1gToaTJMMGVznden-aetclXhZ3cwKzB8XftKeFRTKS9fuMrW7A5KC8JENiyGmWbnYQjvBCMyC4TRPugp2aYiRvBnar4UxTeyXqNiMZZJooIbZFFnb2qIMhAcpPsPQwI/s400/IMG_0263.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I then used a permanent marker to write names on the inchies and gave these name badges out to the members of CRQ with their membership card/programme for the new year. I'm pleased to say they were very well received.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
The members of CRQ have been busy too, and at our January meeting we were delighted to have 33 quilts to hand over to Project Linus.</div>

As you can see from the picture I have already made my decision, but I would still appreciate your thoughts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Fur? Yes or no?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I found this jacket in a local antique/secondhand shop just before Christmas. Speaking to the owner I discovered it is made of red squirrel skins. This isn't as horrendous as it sounds as it dates from the 1930s - 40s when the Canadian red squirrel population was a serious problem and the animals were being culled. Rather than waste the gorgeous fur it was shipped to UK and Europe and made into clothing by skilled furriers. This practice apparently ended during the Suez Crisis when shipping the skins became uneconomical.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I absolutely fell in love with the coat, the colour and sheen are wonderful. It is recycling. It is warm. It makes me feel good.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
But, I do appreciate the anti-fur lobby may not be friendly about it, which is why I would like your opinion, dear reader.</div>

It couldn't be called a workshop, more a funshop.<br>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
My favourite item of all we made was this frosted candle holder with stencilled stars and a tree silhouette painted in acrylic paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<br>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
I was concentrating so hard on book folding that I didn't even notice that Debbie took a picture of Trish, Fenella and me (and our rather messy table). Those are some of Debbie's paintings on the wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

Using felt we made three dimensional tree, bell or bauble-shaped decorations.</div>

All that concentration and book folding resulted in this candle ornament. I have a tea light in it for the photograph but that will be replaced with a battery-operated light for Christmas, I don't want all that work to go up in smoke!Lis Harwoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11700965811840448266noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4673783619090301452.post-87466040965768166252016-11-24T14:39:00.000+00:002016-11-24T14:39:09.201+00:00A Busy Day Now the Rain Has Stopped<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This morning was still a little murky so I hit the sewing straight after breakfast. The quilt in the foreground was already finished and this morning I finished the other two with the exception of hand stitching the binding on the reverse and adding the labels. These are all for Project Linus. They will be collected at Country Roads Quilters in January along with the many, many others members have been generous enough to make.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVBYipREB9bKgOD2svzGuXnyJsDkTaYQAcuphPIlxWWp2pPIp5kliBg6yGweLvc17fWvRnynB-R-BXEVfGET8RbNg4YV0O7S8aJW8jRQdYvQUKQAd-vKX_Ukk2k0E6BQOmKobQr6p0cVQ/s640/blogger-image--1932700887.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVBYipREB9bKgOD2svzGuXnyJsDkTaYQAcuphPIlxWWp2pPIp5kliBg6yGweLvc17fWvRnynB-R-BXEVfGET8RbNg4YV0O7S8aJW8jRQdYvQUKQAd-vKX_Ukk2k0E6BQOmKobQr6p0cVQ/s640/blogger-image--1932700887.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
While I was having lunch there was a knock at the door and a guy standing there with a big box, exciting eh? It was the roses I ordered from Peter Beales in September. Fortunately, the day has brightened up considerably and it is perfect planting weather. All that digging has left me ready for a nice cup of tea and a slice of courgette and lime cake! Tomorrow, assuming it continues to be dry and bright, I shall plant tulip bulbs around the roses and then sit back and wait for Spring.</div>

Although the recent weather has not been as bad here as in other areas of the country it has still been staying in and sewing weather. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I caught up with some of my purchases from Festival of Quilts, firstly making this gorgeous Yuki bag from<a href="http://www.japancrafts.co.uk/store/p220/'Yuki'_Bag_Kit.html"> Japan Crafts</a>. You might notice it contains a few chocolates, ready for Christmas!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifvWei2ehWCv1bl_Tr2J-Zdy2yWktymBIWia2qgI3Oyyl4WNMSXDAH-stR1_LgloTO3YKCQP9FRUOHH7aANEEf6spQ84h7CJocNoFRw5ar_T-zEU79s4tlq1Z5PR5pIRnMgRXFOLz_PCo/s640/blogger-image-931723262.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifvWei2ehWCv1bl_Tr2J-Zdy2yWktymBIWia2qgI3Oyyl4WNMSXDAH-stR1_LgloTO3YKCQP9FRUOHH7aANEEf6spQ84h7CJocNoFRw5ar_T-zEU79s4tlq1Z5PR5pIRnMgRXFOLz_PCo/s640/blogger-image-931723262.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I then worked with the Donegal tweed fabric I bought from <a href="http://www.fabricaffair.co.uk/">Fabric Affair</a>. My original plan had been to make a double sided throw but instead I decided to simply bind the length of tweed and use the squares for a different project. It's so soft and warm so if the weather gets worse I know where I'll be!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZa6KLVW3_1B8tDpPjk1A1L9NOslcKRkjkdZg1Lj6ynV2wIH9mxYVucQzN70MeZYa0pvTV2iF1nGkNv0xn0vwjB6RZapZS5j5eIXCzSvK5iSMoErl08RrAc6650g8RUOkYJgDIixaFtfY/s640/blogger-image-2071116377.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZa6KLVW3_1B8tDpPjk1A1L9NOslcKRkjkdZg1Lj6ynV2wIH9mxYVucQzN70MeZYa0pvTV2iF1nGkNv0xn0vwjB6RZapZS5j5eIXCzSvK5iSMoErl08RrAc6650g8RUOkYJgDIixaFtfY/s640/blogger-image-2071116377.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Next, some secret piecing and stitching, I'll share more of this in January.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

And finally, I started another Project Linus quilt. It's currently a pile of pieces waiting to be pressed and joined, hopefully I'll share a picture in a few days.</div>

Here's hoping the weather is not too bad where you are and that you have avoided storms, flooding, snow, earthquakes, tsunamis, wild winds and torrential rain and managed to keep safe, warm and dry.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Just three pictures today. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I have now removed all the "papers" from Mummy's quilt, except those on the very edge. I have been struck with how much Mummy's stitches have varied. I know my own stitching varies, the stitches usually getting larger as the day goes on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Mummy could be described as a perfectionist in many things, and was a beautiful watercolourist, yet her stitches could be quite erratic. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
A friend at Country Roads Quilts this week summed it up by saying she was "just getting the material sewn together". The quilt is typical of the origins of quilting, made up of what was available and stitched together to provide covering and warmth, quickly. I remember Mummy saying she didn't intend the quilt to cost her a penny. Some hexagons are tacked with up to three pieces of cotton so I think she must have been recycling thread as well as fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I can imagine some of the stitches done at leisure, some in poor light, some maybe in anger for some reason. My sestra wondered whether we should remove the papers in order in case there was a message in them. No message, as such, but those stitches seem full of life and meaning.</div>

We had a wonderful holiday in Mexico to celebrate 25 years of unwedded bliss, Al and I would both go as far as to say it was a perfect holiday. We completely relaxed, enjoyed good food and the glorious setting of our hotel on the Caribbean Sea. Now we are home and it is definitely Winter and I have been sewing enthusiastically. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
My sister came for a visit and she has recently started patchwork. Her first major project is a wedding sampler quilt for her daughter. The wedding is in August 2017 so Jane's going to be busy. While she was here we had a good look at Mummy's quilt. You might remember this is an English paper-pieced "Grandmother's Flower Garden" quilt. Mummy was determined that it was to be all recycled fabrics, in the traditional way. I had thought I might do something dramatic with it but when we laid it out on the guest bed it looked just right so I am simply going to finish it.</div>
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE4A_hJNg0ZnTkDiOzFGJo6o9odBCcVRycmG4toDqZ0PpblRJDqHCOvPRufFts1ZU7L9A5XeuBo3lGpiHsCw4EDZB9qkd5C1feKJLx-9smR9euOuDrIiyuzu2xZ2SJb001OuJMc-1AySM/s640/blogger-image-334831846.jpg" width="480" /><br />
My first job is to remove a lot of the papers to reduce the weight and make the quilt easier to work with. I say "papers" but they are actually more of "cards" being cut from Christmas and birthday cards and art and education supplies catalogues. The fabrics are a real mixture, a lot of furnishing weight and the plain is all curtain lining. Fortunately I also inherited a box full of extra hexagons and fabric. Alan and I have been sitting in companionable silence, with our thoughts, unpicking Mummy's tacking stitches.<br />
<br />
Some news resulting from my sister's recent visit is that she has decided to join me when I visit Japan next year. Golly, it's been a few years since we've shared a bedroom!! We're both really excited about it, or rather, Jane was excited, until I explained about onsen etiquette!! Still, she'll rock the karaoke experience while I'm hiding in the corner. And, speaking of holidays, here's a quick reminder that only a few weeks ago we were enjoying temperatures of 30+° C rather than today's 2°C.<br />

<br />
I had a long chat with Jill Clay of <a href="http://www.festivalofjapan.co.uk/">Festival of Japan</a> when I was at Festival of Quilts in August, and since then I have studied the website, asked a lot of questions, considered my finances and tried to persuade dearly beloved that he would enjoy a textile-based trip to Japan! Al decided against the trip, I think he would rather make another visit to New Zealand, but I really want to go, and Jill's itinerary sounds fantastic, plus she only has small groups, so I've reserved my place on the Autumn Maples and Textiles visit in 2017. <br />
<br />
I'll have thirteen nights based in Kyoto with a host of activities and visits that I'm sure I don't have the connections or the language skills to arrange for myself. <br />
<br />
It's a long way off and I don't have exact dates yet but when I do I will decide whether to extend my trip and visit friends in Tokyo. I've also sent the details to my sister, now she is no longer teaching she has time to travel and I think she might be up for the trip. Golly, could we share a bedroom again, it's been about 50 years!!?<br />
<br />
Before then, however, Al and I have had 25 years together and it's time to celebrate. We're soon taking off for a lazy holiday in Akumal Bay, Mexico.<br />

Just gentle hand stitching, very relaxing. I am in the process of deciding to make another trip to Japan, hopefully next year, so the contemplative sewing is perfect. Hoping the weekend has been good for you all. It's back to school for children (and teachers) this week.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3AYhS7xpKviNSTYTBYmdR8oTpI2eYi27CTqNzhXkLRfCQT_CZKzrQjLvu6m-Rtx99iH8VeqXkMqplpfvx0_b4nUFN8truj0N3yS9NfppDCN1v5H5yaSnwiKAuNHbB0grUdXe5F5pTRV8/s640/blogger-image--2127535890.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3AYhS7xpKviNSTYTBYmdR8oTpI2eYi27CTqNzhXkLRfCQT_CZKzrQjLvu6m-Rtx99iH8VeqXkMqplpfvx0_b4nUFN8truj0N3yS9NfppDCN1v5H5yaSnwiKAuNHbB0grUdXe5F5pTRV8/s640/blogger-image--2127535890.jpg"></a></div>Lis Harwoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11700965811840448266noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4673783619090301452.post-64166440004840781002016-08-26T15:35:00.001+01:002016-08-26T15:35:54.615+01:00Journal Quilts and Omiyage<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">I had a lovely gift from my good friend and co-conspirator in Country Roads Quilters, Fenella, the other day, a delicious "omiyage", a gift. The little bag, the design of which is daffodil or trillium, is made in "our colours" - Fenella's green and my blue, and it contained a blue and white crystal, sodalite, which is perfect for me at the moment as it is believed to promote creative expression and also diminish sleeplessness. Thank you Fenella. I think, made in Christmas fabrics, these little bags would be lovely on the table instead of crackers, I wonder whether I'll get round to it for 2016?</span></div>

<span style="text-align: start;">It is fast approaching the end of the month and the end of the middle phase of the Journal Quilt challenge, quilts for May, June, July and August have to be published by the end of August. So today I've done the final binding and taken the photographs. Here are all four "green" JQs together:</span></div>

Okay, I guess it's time to own up, especially as several of you dear readers don't seem to believe there were only needles and a thimble in my FoQ bag!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At The New Threads Quilt Shop stand you could mix and match Aurifil threads to your own requirements. Although Aurifil do their own sets there is always one colour or two that I don't really want so I jumped at this opportunity. How strange, I ended up with a box of blue and white thread!! I have the 12wt lana (red reel), 50 wt (the orange reel ends) which I use for almost everything and I bought two reels of 28 wt (the grey ends) for hand work.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next, an unusual purchase for me these days, a quilt kit. I'd seen this Blue Barn fabric from Moda on The Bramble Patch's Facebook page and fallen in love with it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next purchase was more of an impulse buy after I'd seen a friend's beautiful bag pattern and fabric from Fabric Affair who sell Donegal tweed. I bought a length of tweed and a set of nine squares to make a double-sided and very warm and cosy throw.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, I visited Caroline Hill and bought these wonderful eco-dyed fabrics and threads as well as a beautiful scarf. I know I could do things like this myself but I don't seem to get round to it and her pieces were so gorgeous I just couldn't resist.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oh, and I bought some needles too, but no thimbles, I've decided to attempt to make one out of leather using my Japanese one as a pattern.</div>

Looking at other visitors' blog reports I find that either I missed many or I was at a different show from them!! Anyway, here is a selection of quilts that just caught my eye for various reasons, and not just the blue and white ones! It is quite interesting for me to note that many of them could be categorised in the "Modern Quilt" style, which I profess to dislike, I guess that's the difficulty with categories!<br />

In 'personal interpretations and experiences of what may be Concealed', Sandra Meech, Hilary Beattie, Edwina MacKinnon, Cas Holmes and friends created an inspiring and thought-provoking collection of quilts.<br>

One of my favourite galleries at FoQ this year was on Stand L14 and was a collection of quilts from Japan and Korea, together called "Harmony". This is the exhibition information:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8BER-Xs0Ugkhl7cP6QkeG2scaXcilMh_ixDXYWlK6EbEiUMKhsoue5G4Er_nY-H1hERBDWwai6Qtu6QMl0sfYNMTB77R_WQ3mDda9ZRGfQq8gTXnybthh2ZhvZ8sjVTniGxf60h3XdPY/s1600/IMG_9308.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8BER-Xs0Ugkhl7cP6QkeG2scaXcilMh_ixDXYWlK6EbEiUMKhsoue5G4Er_nY-H1hERBDWwai6Qtu6QMl0sfYNMTB77R_WQ3mDda9ZRGfQq8gTXnybthh2ZhvZ8sjVTniGxf60h3XdPY/s640/IMG_9308.jpg" width="523"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I took photos of some of the quilts and some close-up pictures, I also took pictures of the quilt descriptions (not always as straight or as in focus as they could be, it was a busy gallery, sorry). Enjoy.</div>

We were all very pleased with our quilt and indebted to the project co-ordinator, Liz Lane. We look forward to reading the judges' comments but we know we did our absolute best at this point in our group's quilting career. <br>
It was very special for me to meet up with Janine Ibbini, one of my Indigo Sisters from our time in Fujino, Japan. Janine was a judge at FoQ this year and, although she didn't judge our quilt, it was very lovely of her to comment on Facebook pictures of our quilt,<br>
"I spotted this quilt while I was chatting to someone and took a photo as I think it's a beauty!! How cool is that to know it's yours!! I love the colour scheme." <br>
Wow, thank you Janine!!<br>
<br>
This is our "blurb" about our quilt:<br>
The colours in each country road block represent Lincolnshire. Our beautiful county has rolling green pastures and distinctive soils while expansive farmland gives us big skies and glorious sunsets reaching the sea. Red represents the cross of St George in the Lincolnshire flag with the blocks separated by country roads.<br>
<br>
Our quilt was positioned alongside the winning quilts (did they just forget to pop the rosette on ours?!!) and so we had a great opportunity to admire the most excellent work at close quarters after adoring our own efforts. Here are a few, with some close-ups, (apologies for missing one or two names):<br>

I only need to buy needles and a new thimble so I thought a small bag would do! Hmm, just in case I buy a little more I made the Natsu bag from Japan Crafts. "Natsu" means Summer and this enormous bag would hold everything necessary for a day by the sea so it should be big enough for my needles and thimble!! The bag is an easy pattern made of 40 charm squares and a metre of fabric. There's quite a lot of hand sewing and I used an extra strong thread, just to be on the safe side.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhitCfIHpayXadWQScZL2SdNSp6ed2XzyjxREcwL121LLVEhcTB8f894r07Yn5Om3Ql9v-liagbnAMe5s23b7JHZ1HO0d2WywNeDE8DmwRUUjbsgBX5xbBr0RJhjpYjXkRG_EG6rreR9W8/s640/blogger-image-138257939.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhitCfIHpayXadWQScZL2SdNSp6ed2XzyjxREcwL121LLVEhcTB8f894r07Yn5Om3Ql9v-liagbnAMe5s23b7JHZ1HO0d2WywNeDE8DmwRUUjbsgBX5xbBr0RJhjpYjXkRG_EG6rreR9W8/s640/blogger-image-138257939.jpg"></a></div>I've nearly finished the journal quilt for August, just some stitching to do.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTkg2NR37qKewqb_SKTnGq9r9greQ8mSzpH-ZU9Qwlj33ANAqjs0MwExlkwiV9ebiqGJoEM7q9rh0ofpYkSuELHpcQXrAKMub4Z5trnAFW-i5Moxg_M_7L9Asa0bQcLjOUV3L14PiCkYs/s640/blogger-image--2008848786.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTkg2NR37qKewqb_SKTnGq9r9greQ8mSzpH-ZU9Qwlj33ANAqjs0MwExlkwiV9ebiqGJoEM7q9rh0ofpYkSuELHpcQXrAKMub4Z5trnAFW-i5Moxg_M_7L9Asa0bQcLjOUV3L14PiCkYs/s640/blogger-image--2008848786.jpg"></a></div>Green has been the colour for these four months:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">May</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM4dOfvI62Wk0RQekwC_2zbwcNC_vPRQlqfkPyLRJ1PhcuI2YM9rWLRgddaxF622zgRWmJic9l7ZZKcI7sU2uJHhYS7GkJ8TnYluyIOAacRuQFI4dloq-5PQFFm8MBbpXZxHAckwjdYNo/s640/blogger-image--1505382013.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM4dOfvI62Wk0RQekwC_2zbwcNC_vPRQlqfkPyLRJ1PhcuI2YM9rWLRgddaxF622zgRWmJic9l7ZZKcI7sU2uJHhYS7GkJ8TnYluyIOAacRuQFI4dloq-5PQFFm8MBbpXZxHAckwjdYNo/s640/blogger-image--1505382013.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">June</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0S-SBfeT8A_gmxs9PHzXLauiH3opHeZqOGO1r5wGeKbHu66U82synnJCuKRjK6PiLxtpULLSohZwPqvPaWdA47No-NT2FKMRqe2__Jb7PRFclb3XESsWzNtbuqcFIrjcVaNjuKyosbmo/s640/blogger-image--32829436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0S-SBfeT8A_gmxs9PHzXLauiH3opHeZqOGO1r5wGeKbHu66U82synnJCuKRjK6PiLxtpULLSohZwPqvPaWdA47No-NT2FKMRqe2__Jb7PRFclb3XESsWzNtbuqcFIrjcVaNjuKyosbmo/s640/blogger-image--32829436.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">July</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicYsRUkfh3itUoZG7vdiWeVsb7MgEdbfqen2b6f44ui4qUiOA3ZU9N-Z9HtvJO5CT3BDcEv4kQEsF2pT2_zNIQrOdBbYs5lTwyPuM0NwqOc80VBeaLMpxFbPTvxQtGSfvydg3wRf0mQ-M/s640/blogger-image--660100580.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicYsRUkfh3itUoZG7vdiWeVsb7MgEdbfqen2b6f44ui4qUiOA3ZU9N-Z9HtvJO5CT3BDcEv4kQEsF2pT2_zNIQrOdBbYs5lTwyPuM0NwqOc80VBeaLMpxFbPTvxQtGSfvydg3wRf0mQ-M/s640/blogger-image--660100580.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Right, back to those lists I think. I have been very fortunate and been given this sampler. It amazes me that things like this survive at all, it must have been treasured and saved from the skip several times during its life and now I will take care of it.<br />

Ta dah, the wedding quilt I made for my daughter and her wife who got married yesterday.</span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzbf5Tc85RsNpNVP9mL5YDnqOq1gf416HUjrxNsUgmwgfqcTYjwmdzotoHEyiQBXGppP6NnLwy-V8fKjYZ4hepYIcsqQ-m8CDs9Oi5Arn4agkboeY-W3puMl8UUZm4Ra6IXru8XTSaByA/s640/blogger-image--139251108.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzbf5Tc85RsNpNVP9mL5YDnqOq1gf416HUjrxNsUgmwgfqcTYjwmdzotoHEyiQBXGppP6NnLwy-V8fKjYZ4hepYIcsqQ-m8CDs9Oi5Arn4agkboeY-W3puMl8UUZm4Ra6IXru8XTSaByA/s640/blogger-image--139251108.jpg"></a>It's the pattern called Winding Ways and instead of the usual light and dark tones I added some medium into the mix which I think gives the pattern a bit more interest and movement. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I, somewhat crazily as I didn't have a vast amount of notice, decided to hand quilt it. You know that I much prefer to hand sew and I felt the personal connection was very important for a wedding quilt for my daughter. Blood, blisters and bruising aside, I finished with three whole days to spare!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpITfmOM8asiPQUCz4ACqML0rT1LMn6NKr3gqVdIXmx9WCBol18lfMZsVGS5ejLW69NuhAXAVq9wVrO7f3kjspch2KwI4vAjmAfkxdqHtYKCBI9aqQxtthyphenhyphenTeJDg1naxe3c5xnOeCSDC0/s640/blogger-image--1952842096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpITfmOM8asiPQUCz4ACqML0rT1LMn6NKr3gqVdIXmx9WCBol18lfMZsVGS5ejLW69NuhAXAVq9wVrO7f3kjspch2KwI4vAjmAfkxdqHtYKCBI9aqQxtthyphenhyphenTeJDg1naxe3c5xnOeCSDC0/s640/blogger-image--1952842096.jpg"></a></div>I showed the finished quilt to the lovely ladies at Country Roads Quilters before giving it to Sara and Emma and they were very complimentary which made me feel very good, especially as I had a lot of problems piecing the blocks. I think it must have been because of the range of fabrics, different weaves and densities although they were all quilting cottons, but while one seam could be perfect, the next could be as much as an inch out! I have never unpicked as much on a project as on this one. Still, in the end it all came together and the important thing is the love in all those stitches and that the newly weds had a wonderful day and love their new quilt.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC2iRtExW2SN6dWHFBXrwfNJ4khBZ4kdT6StPFSSOcj-6mjM2ez-fcg8sJ09Vg3-xSAxsFXaChS_30zWQb4P6VaZBAxI31EMCp1QNRoQLSluH4jIDyjHZ5vk7yBAAsnUq221TJ4acrmYM/s640/blogger-image-727828884.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC2iRtExW2SN6dWHFBXrwfNJ4khBZ4kdT6StPFSSOcj-6mjM2ez-fcg8sJ09Vg3-xSAxsFXaChS_30zWQb4P6VaZBAxI31EMCp1QNRoQLSluH4jIDyjHZ5vk7yBAAsnUq221TJ4acrmYM/s640/blogger-image-727828884.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div>Lis Harwoodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11700965811840448266noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4673783619090301452.post-53979782441596098242016-06-04T15:51:00.001+01:002016-06-04T15:51:57.115+01:00Boro in PositionToday we finally got my beautiful indigo textile in position on the bedroom wall.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvx1O6vsUMHuiuW2-FVyhWPu_VxAvfOC5jWvnIn1xJmnWpIPJ8Y65xasDxGLun4fyrEYKMtGK_JVCszmaZi9-HPuUX7D31-nruhyphenhyphenU9iM0kjLiqPqvDcqDb5XaDyIQu19HZCm5RImDhUyE/s640/blogger-image-324887499.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvx1O6vsUMHuiuW2-FVyhWPu_VxAvfOC5jWvnIn1xJmnWpIPJ8Y65xasDxGLun4fyrEYKMtGK_JVCszmaZi9-HPuUX7D31-nruhyphenhyphenU9iM0kjLiqPqvDcqDb5XaDyIQu19HZCm5RImDhUyE/s640/blogger-image-324887499.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivj1rrgs9rKJtTpuwj5b1OYequw-6eEHfWlLn10XTrGfwSnkILuqvJuwJtMbK34EoBcKhaw_3R9LxNcZveUV51Jp2WZ9pvLdIt2sJRlFT7fSftjlLvyx-tNylnf4hqlK3pkVuIvsvxiUA/s640/blogger-image--1001569634.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivj1rrgs9rKJtTpuwj5b1OYequw-6eEHfWlLn10XTrGfwSnkILuqvJuwJtMbK34EoBcKhaw_3R9LxNcZveUV51Jp2WZ9pvLdIt2sJRlFT7fSftjlLvyx-tNylnf4hqlK3pkVuIvsvxiUA/s640/blogger-image--1001569634.jpg"></a></div>I am really pleased to be able to appreciate it and give it a new life. Today I have put it aside for the day because I need to buy some of that lead-filled tape to weight the bottom, so I have finished a much smaller project.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoC_2I-9yj2-l-I_5gM1GdzzOxDUzdEor2iADjFPt_8JRJY8Ed0pQPzhsC4u_FVz8sMxn8kcpo7g-r3Sf2urUkkZBccV_0WyaeYqsI0HhvZcOAAMMd62XlEBeKm4jiR0paKIbPi6B_I-c/s640/blogger-image--1199888997.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoC_2I-9yj2-l-I_5gM1GdzzOxDUzdEor2iADjFPt_8JRJY8Ed0pQPzhsC4u_FVz8sMxn8kcpo7g-r3Sf2urUkkZBccV_0WyaeYqsI0HhvZcOAAMMd62XlEBeKm4jiR0paKIbPi6B_I-c/s640/blogger-image--1199888997.jpg"></a></div>It's a little mat/runner for my bureau of treasures. For a while I admired the history of the piece, the poverty of working people that led to repeated repairs and patching of textiles, the elegantly fading indigo, the large hand stitching. </div><div>I have done a lot of houseclearing lately, and this made me consider what my children think of the tatty blue fabric? Sara will know what it is but I can't imagine she'd want to give it house room. So, I am giving it a new life, as sympathetically as possible but it still involves....SCISSORS!!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUQy_XB3ZZx1x3Ewu4u4ePEghdfdJbkIdYsE09LT_McEoBEKrz_yIvYD3iWiDJMU0FVwWbut-kqRuRBWhDMpIEG25Rtf_kOQv-cLiXIwIdIpfoaG7ok47CbyJ17zEkS0Mut2dInxKLK_I/s640/blogger-image--1679970873.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUQy_XB3ZZx1x3Ewu4u4ePEghdfdJbkIdYsE09LT_McEoBEKrz_yIvYD3iWiDJMU0FVwWbut-kqRuRBWhDMpIEG25Rtf_kOQv-cLiXIwIdIpfoaG7ok47CbyJ17zEkS0Mut2dInxKLK_I/s640/blogger-image--1679970873.jpg"></a></div>I started by cutting a large section of the cloth, about 6'x3', and hemmed it using cotton thread I dyed with indigo in Fujino four years ago. I used big, soft stitches. This section will become a wall hanging, so that I can enjoy it everyday. The sides I stitched in sashiko thread, echoing the stitching on the edges of the cloth. The thread will become less bright with time.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3XwTzno07P5tZnk4d6MbE8PsIFIiT6DpGaj2kEbUhNlGkT0nUdNUXjXOBX5riZkgvfLFNjtiPCPHouc3nP7Vz9s5HeSMQ3GY7H5WEza91h2oESnNvBPXECG0omO1mQ9ZdjHAX684dPYU/s640/blogger-image--675606059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3XwTzno07P5tZnk4d6MbE8PsIFIiT6DpGaj2kEbUhNlGkT0nUdNUXjXOBX5riZkgvfLFNjtiPCPHouc3nP7Vz9s5HeSMQ3GY7H5WEza91h2oESnNvBPXECG0omO1mQ9ZdjHAX684dPYU/s640/blogger-image--675606059.jpg"></a></div></div><div>The next stage is to patch and repair the textile.
