Friday Night Sew-In: Saturday Morning Report, October 2011

I'm posting during FNSI itself just before I go for a nice soak in the bath and then an early night.  I got back from a trip to Rugby this afternoon (the English town not the World Cup in New Zealand sadly) and have been working on my "Southern Belle" bag since having a lovely fish and chip dinner (thanks DH for fetching it).  I'm getting on quite nicely but am now wondering whether I ought to "cheat" and machine the lines of stitching that strengthen the handles.  I was intending to do the whole bag by hand but...what would you do?
My early night is in aid of it being QGBI Region 10 Area Day tomorrow.  Susan Briscoe is coming to speak about her Japanese Quilt Inspirations and on Sunday I'm doing a workshop with her, Japanese Circles and Squares.  I'm very excited and will hopefully have a lot of photographs to share with you next week plus a quilt top.  Hoping you're all having a good FNSI and that you have a lovely weekend.

  1. there's no shame in using the sewing machine to speed things up. sounds like you're having a grand time.

  2. I think that machine stitching the handles will make them sturdier than if they were sewn by hand.
I also think that with all these classes that you are taking you might give us a workshop or two during our JST.

  3. Will you wish you had sewn it all by hand later on? I think the machine stitching will make it stronger though... Enjoy your weekend!

  4. I had a Friday Night Eat Out instead ... Mother in law turned 21 for the 4th time round! The bag looks lovely. Have you got webbing inside the straps? That would strengthen them, my worry would be the integrity of the joint of handle to bag. Hope you find a solution you are happy with

  5. I like the sturdiness of machine stitching the straps - but perhaps you already know what this bag will be doing. If it's only destined for 'light duties' I'd probably hand stitch if that was how I was constructing the rest of it, just to maintain that 'one style' thing..... so not a real answer from me, I'm afraid. It looks lovely though!

  6. I love your bag. Personally I always use a machine for handles to make them stronger. Hope you are enjoying Norfolk. See you in December Angela

  7. Lovely bag! I expect you've decided on the solution for your handles so I won't add my penn'orth. Also, as I've only made 2 bags before I don't think i'm qualified to give advice. :-)
