Antique Quilts

I've just been staying in Northland NZ for a few days at an amazing backpackers' that is on a dairy farm.  It has been in the Johanson family for generations and I enjoyed looking at these quilts that were in the farmhouse and thought I'd share them.  (I stayed at the same place, Kahoe Farms, two years ago and have put one of the quilts on my blog before but I'm sure you'll enjoy seeing the others).  Some of them were really worn and fragile but they were "proper" quilts, by that I mean that they'd been made with leftover and recycled fabrics - a lot of curtaining and heavier fabrics and some blanket instead of our brand new fabrics and wadding that we like to use now.  They seem to have been used and enjoyed and to have stories to share of the people who'd known them (am I being too romantic?  I don't think so, it is how I feel).  Enjoy.

  5. How nice that your hosts shared the quilts with you, but then, I'm sure they know that you are a quilt lover too. Don't you just love it when you find such treasures while travelling!

  6. I've been reading your blog since a few weeks and now finally want to say a little hello and leave a comment for the beautiful quilts your host is sharing with us bloggers. I liked the story behind the found treasures. Wishing you a good journey with still a lot of nice experiences...and perhaps some more quilts to be discovered.
    Greetings from Switzerland,

  7. That's what quilting is all about for me. I tr to steer clear of new, all-matching, co-ordinated fabrics. It's the random look that I like. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I am so pleased you enjoyed seeing these lovely quilts. Yes, Jovita, the second picture is half the quilt, it was so fragile we weren't sure about unfolding it completely. I'm glad you're all as romantic about them as I am :)
